Introducing Nucleus

As Tom is still traveling the world, I decided to break the silence and fill you in on a revolutionary DotNetNuke product we have just released.

Nucleus is a DotNetNuke skinning framework that gives you total control over your portal's appearance. You can use it to generate as many page skins and containers as your heart desires without leaving your browser. You don't need to know HTML or CSS. Adding style to your pages is as simple as changing the values in some fields.

I prepared a quick intro video that will help you get a better understanding of what Nucleus is capable of.

We have also set up a demo page where you can test drive Nucleus and of course you can get more details on its official page.

Thanks for reading and watching everyone!

Tom come home!

This looks like a very interesting product!

WOW, looks magic, wonderful, amazing, incredible !!!!!!!!!

But... But when I had a look to Snowcovered for buying it, I was blocked by the price... For professional, no problem probably. But for people like me, amateur who are using DNN for their passion (video editing), it's completely impossible to buy such a good product.

On the other hand, I understand that this amazing work need a good retribution, but I would have expected something lower, like with other modules (Ventrian, DNNStuff, etc...)
It seems that DNN core and modules are slowly moving towards a Professional system, rather than for amateur... Loosing some public, that's a pity.

Congratulations anyway.

Thanks guys.

@ DV - I think $99 is a steal for an amateur to be able to generate a unique DNN skin.

Hello Tom,

I did not want to offense you, but I pay to host my website, to have some modules (DNN Stuff and Ventrian), and at the end, it's just for the fun of having a website for my passion, the video. I do not earn anything with my website, that's why I said that 99$ was a little too much for an amateur, but without any intention to offense anybody.

I also understand that you need to earn something on this kind of excellent product. I just wanted to say that I would love such kind of product, but I can not afford it. For sure, it was a silly comment, and I apologize for having posted it. I have to admit that I see that DNN is becoming more and more commercial oriented, and that's annoying... At first, it was a free project, with plenty of goodwilling people, with low price/low budget module. It's more and more a commercial tool, and I do not feel I belong to this way of thinking anymore. I did not understood the two packages for DNN, one "free" and one "paying project" for having more. Quite strange. But nothing to do with you or your excellent website and great work you are doing.

Sorry, I get lost.

@ DV - There is absolutely no offence! On the contrary we really thank you for the time you spend to post your thoughts. Without feedback we cannot move forward. And you do make some valid points. I understand that not everyone can pay $99 for a module, especially for non commercial sites. That's why we are thinking to make a free version available. That's not official yet as we are still evaluating pros and cons but it's more than possible to happen.

Thanks again!

Declan made a screencast where he shows how to make a new container using Nucleus.

I bought this product and it is unbelievable! It works perfectly and is very organic in the way you can change things on the fly. I can't wait for the next version...I would love to see some rounded corner enhancements and other CSS design options which will make this the tool of choice for all your skinning needs.

Tom Kraak Tom Kraak says:

Thanks Dean, we very much appreciate your feedback. Feel free to post further questions, concerns, or feature requests on the official Nucleus forum.

Thanks again.

Quite frankly, this is one of the coolest things to be brought to the DNN eco-system in a looooooong time. Just looking at it, I know how much work must've gone into building it - and even then, my estimate is probably lower than the reality.

However, as DNN has grown, paid products is inevitable. As products and DNN have evolved, and expectations for feature sets has risen with the high levels of adoptions, the amount of time to meet these needs is simple too much for a hobbyist to keep up with. Everyone needs to eat. When you compare what this extension does to similar offerings in products other than DNN, this is not a steal. They'd be giving it away at $99 USD. For example, something like this in SharePoint would cost more than $2000.00 USD.

However, to better appeal to the masses and to even drive more sales, I would suggest a community version with less features, with the option to buy support.

I have looked at skin tuners before and always dropped them quickly as they lack an "SEO" core to them - normally Javascript based menus. I haven't seen anything yet that would exclude this from exactly what my firm has been looking for. One of our requirements has always been the custom page layout factor. Is this a product in which you could design different page layouts with - through your choice of editors - then still tune with the nucleus? Obviously, keeping the same div ids and classes in place I assume?
