DotNetNuke 4.5 Announced

DNN 4.5 is scheduled to be released on March 15, 2007 according to the February newsletter of the DotNetNuke Corporation. Here is a quick summary of what to look forward to:

  • Web-based installer for new installations. Core Team member Charles Nurse gives a preview of the installer on his blog.

  • User-level permissions have been added along side the role-based permissions we are all used to. This will make user and permission management much easier.

  • Dynamic Google SiteMap support. As an SEM, I'm looking forward to take this baby for a spin. Look for a review on this blog towards the end of March.

  • ASP.NET Ajax. Not sure why this is listed as a new enhancement since all it says is that the DNN Corporation has "concluded that ASP.NET AJAX is the optimal AJAX solution for our requirements." So don't look for any fancy "desktop-like" features just now.

  • More performance optimization especially in multi-portal environments. I applaud the DNN Team for its continued focus on performance.

  • A number of usability improvements. The FCK editor has finally been promoted to the default editor in DNN. What a relief! This is usually one of the first things I change after a new DNN install. Other enhancements include a new toolbar when doing in-line edits of module titles and text/html module content as well as a new "View Mode" which, quite honestly, I don't understand what it does yet.

  • The "Features" area has been extended to a new Solution Explorer as "a direct way to connect consumers with providers in the ever expanding DotNetNuke ecosystem." For now that means pushing DotNetNuke reviewed skins and modules through the DNN Marketplace.

  • Licensing support for commercial modules. As far as I understand, module developers will now be able to tie modules to your specific portal or installation to make sure you adhere to the license agreement. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

In other news, the "DotNetNuke for Dummies" book that many of you are waiting for is scheduled to go on sale on April 10, 2007. Well, we've heard that before, but this seems to be the real deal.

Putting the FCK editor into the DNN core will be great. Now I have to upgrade all of my installations. The default editor is OK but FCK is awesome. I also recently found a bug in the default editor when linking to files.

Woody, you don't have to upgrade just to get the FCK editor ... you can install it any time.
