DNN OpenForce 07 Day 1

Posted by Tom on Tuesday, November 06, 2007 to DNN News, OpenForce 07

Welcome to my coverage of DNN OpenForce 07. Don’t worry; you did not miss anything yet. The conference did officially started yesterday, but besides a rather lame executive keynote by a bunch of Microsoft marketing guys and overpriced Vegas beer, there was not much going on. I made a quick stop at the DNN booth in the expo hall after the keynote, but all I really wanted to do is hit the pillow after being up and about for almost 24 hours straight.

So here we are, Tuesday morning, about 9:30 am US Pacific Time. Today’s sessions will kick off with Shaun Walker’s highly anticipated DotNetNuke keynote address at 10:30 am.

11:45 am - Shaun just stepped off the stage and here is the gist of his keynote:

  • dotnetnuke.com reached 500,000 registered users today
  • DNN 4.7 released today
  • DotNetNuke "Cambrian" (formerly known as DNN 5.0) announced (social networking API and core module suite, workflow engine, content localization, upgraded skinning engine, ...)

    • 1st look at Cambrian in January 2008
    • 1st production release of Cambrian in 1st quarter of 2008
    • Full release of Cambrian in 4th quarter of 2008
  • get a copy of Shaun's entire presentation here (pdf - 3.10 mb)

12:35 pm - DotNetNuke Business Opportunities (Shaun Walker)

  • DNN partnershop program will be launched by the end of 2007
  • businesses will have formal relationship with DNN Corporation
  • business leads will be routed to partners

4:30 pm - Building WAP DNN Modules Using Ajax, Web Services & Silverlight (Philip Beadle & Mitchel Sellers)

Philip and Mitchel put on a good “show.” What struck me the most was their genuine enthusiasm for the topic on hand and for DNN in general.

For the rest of the day I was able to get some face time with various members of the DNN community to talk DotNetNuke, business, and DotNetNuke business … very enjoyable!

This wraps up day 1 of OpenForce 2007. Tomorrow will start with a bang as ScottGu, Phill Haack, Rob Conery, and Shaun Walker take the stage for a panel discussion on Open Source on the Microsoft Technology Stack. Catch you then!

Could you be more specific about DNN 5 release date and features, please?

Post some photos too (if you've made those). It's really interesting to find out how the people you only knew by forum username look.

Cambrian and those biz partnerships sound very interesting! More details?

Also, DNN.com at half a million users? Wow! I had no idea. What does that mean exactly? Are you saying there are half a million users registered at the main dotnetnuke.com site?

I've updated the above post in regards to the Cambrian release dates.

Yes, over 500,000 registered users ... see the UsersOnline module on dnn.com.

I hope you get a chance to go see the Subsonic-DNN presentation, and give us your thoughts:

Using the Subsonic DAL with DotNetNuke
Jim Bonnie and Rob Connery

Of all the new progress in the core, the DAL remains my biggest stumbling block. Subsonic is my only hope (until I can figure out VS 2008's LINQ to SQL).

I only hope Rob can forgive OpenForce for misspelling his name...

Sure Jim, I'll probably have to do half-and-half between your session and the concurrently running one.
