DNN OpenForce 07 Day 2

Posted by Tom on Wednesday, November 07, 2007 to DNN News, OpenForce 07

Welcome to day 2 of DNN OpenForce 2007. I'm looking forward to a busy day of interesting sessions

8:15 am - Open Source on the Microsoft Technology Stack (Scott Hanselman instead of ScottGu, Phill Haack, Rob Conery, and Shaun Walker)

  • the guys start off with talking about the licensing issues of their respective projects
  • Charlie (sorry, I did not get his last name) of NUnit is in the audience ...  this is gonna be fun!
  • Peter Donker of Bring2mind just asked a couple of interesting questions in regards to Microsofts attitude towards open source in general and Scott Hanselman points to microsoft.com/opensource
  • Phill Haack: "Fear the right things."
  • Scott Hanselman in regards to Microsoft's "opening" of the .net framework: " ... source opened."
  • more snippets from the panel discussion here

10:05 am - Using the Subsonic DAL with DotNetNuke (Jim Bonnie & Rob Connery)

  • Jim Bonnie is from my neck of the woods ... go Jim!
  • half-way thru the session I sneaked into the next room to get a glimps of the concurrent session, but I jgot back just in time as the fundamental question of adopting Subsonic into the DNN core came up
  • with plenty of core team member in attendance, some interesting ideas were bounced around and Subsonic is definitely a consideration without concrete commitments from either end

10:35 am - Site Administration Best Practices (Chris Hammond)

  • for some reason I anticipated this session to be rather "introductory", so I was pleasantly surprised that Chris went beyond the basics here and there and I learned a thing or two in regards to Single Sign On (SSI) tweaks
  • the session was well attended and I'm sure Chris will have the complete session on his blog soon (link to come)

11:45 am - DotNetNuke Modules: Beyond the Browser (Nik Kalyani)

  • widgets, widgets and more widgets
  • DNN widget toolkit in the works

2:40 pm - Data Exchange and User Personalization (Vicenc Masanas)

  • again, I'm trying to split my time between 2 concurrently running sessions
  • Human Friendly URLs introduced with DNN 4.7 (still no seperator in multi-word page names though)
  • it's a real pleasure to listen to Vicenc, but most of the stuff he touches on is way over my head so I switched rooms to see what Sebastion is up to

3:10 pm - Configuring DNN Portals for International Audiences (Sebastian Leupold)

  • If you've spend any time on the DNN forums at all, you know who Sebastian is (9068 plus posts and counting)
  • besides the basic coverage of how static localization currently functions in DNN, Sebastian goes to great lengths to point out common pitfals to avoid for module developers as well as DNN admins
  • one can tell that he actually experienced almost anything he touches on in his presentation while localizing DNN for the German market

4:15 pm - DotNetNuke Performance - Why? What? How? (Charles Nurse)

  • as you are probably aware, Charles Nurse spend some time in a Microsoft testing lab just prior to the DNN 4.4 release
  • Charles begins with a quick intro about the different components that play a role in the performace of a given web application
  • he goes on to shed some light on tools that are available and that he actually used while putting load on DNN in the MS lab (MS SQL Profiler & ANTS Profiler by Red Gate Software)
  • Charles wraps up by elaborating on some stats, which essentially show a 30% boost in performance of DNN 4.4 compared to previous versions

That's it from me for day 2 of DNN OpenForce 2007. Since we had an early start this morning, I'm about ready to call it a day ... after taking care of some piled up email that is. I hope you tune in again tomorrow for the final sessions before the conference draws to a close.
