Top Tips for Title Tags

Posted by Tom on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 to DotNetNuke, SEO

Rand over at SEOmoz put a nice post together on best practices for title tags. If you only do one thing as far as search engine optimization (SEO) is concerned, I strongly recommend you take good care of your page titles.

Besides telling the browser what text to display in its title bar, title tags are used by all major search engines as the link and main title of your site’s listing on the engine’s search results pages (SERPs.)

If you are on DNN, you don’t even have to deal with HTML to give your pages meaningful titles. With at least admin rights, click Settings on the top left of your page to access all Page Management functions. The first text box holds the page name as it appears in your main navigation. Your page title goes into the second text box appropriately labeled “Page Title.” Remember, no more than 65 characters, including spaces. I use Word’s Word Count to get the length just right.

One last thing to note, even though we are talking SEO here, write your titles to appeal foremost to humans (as in people) ... search bots will follow!

Great post Tom.
I wonder if you might elaborate (another blog post? ) about the *other* bits in the Page settings and their relationship to SEO- i.e., the "description" and "keywords" fields...
